Diaconia University of Applied Sciences (Diak) has joined 270 other higher education institutions in calling for European University Alliances to be explicitly recognised as key contributors to Europe’s competitiveness, sovereignty and skills.

The joint statement, signed by 271 higher education institutions from 30 European countries, calls on the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament to recognise and support the role of European University Alliances in the EU’s 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework and the European Competitiveness Fund.

Diak is one of the signatories through its membership in the EduCare 5.0 European University Alliance. The statement highlights the collective role played by European universities in addressing the major crises Europe has faced in recent years and the importance of the capacity of European universities to support local and regional economic development, strengthen European values and identity, and to help bridge the disparities.

– European University Alliances play an important role in developing the skills needed to respond to global industrial, technological, social and environmental challenges. For Diak, international cooperation is closely connected to the development of education, expertise and solutions to societal challenges, says Suvi Äärilä, Head of International Affairs at Diak.
