International exchange for degree students at Diak

As a degree student at Diak you have a possibility to complete a work placement or student exchange period abroad. An exchange period is an opportunity to acquire the skills and experience needed in today’s global environment.

  • During a study exchange, you complete degree-related courses at a partner institution. The studies are planned in advance and, after the exchange, they are fully accredited towards your degree.
  • During a work placement exchange, you complete your placement at one of Diak’s partner organisations, such as associations, international hospitals, seamen’s churches, or other partner institutions. The minimum length for placements is two months. You may also search for a placement independently in Europe.

When considering international exchange, it is useful to reflect on at least the following questions:

  • What field of work am I interested in?
  • Do I want to improve my language skills, and in which language?
  • Which culture interests me?
  • Do I want to work with a specific client group?

Learning objectives during international exchange

International exchange combines the professional objectives of your studies with your personal goals related to individual growth.

In an international study or traineeship environment, your skills develop, and you learn new things outside the formal curriculum.

In addition to meeting the official learning objectives, you gain confidence in your work. Experiencing multiculturalism and being in a minority position provide valuable tools for your future career.

As a student, you are not expected to know everything. Instead, you can safely build a foundation for your professional identity — one that will support you well into the future.

The professional learning objectives of your studies can be found in the implementation plans available in MyDiak.

Set your goals!

For a successful exchange, it is important to align your professional goals with the content offered by your exchange destination. In most Diak degree programmes, you can go on exchange during several different semesters.

You may include two exchange periods abroad in a single degree.

Possible obstacles to exchange may include health-related reasons, slow study progress, or missing assignments.
