1,900 students received a mass email on January 15 at 12:23 PM from a Diak student promoting a citizens’ initiative. The email was sent without Diak’s approval, and Diak as an organisation does not take a stance on the mentioned initiative.
There were no security issues in the message, but it violated Diak’s network usage rules. Diak’s ICT services automatically deleted the email from all recipients’ inboxes. We are also reviewing the data protection and usage settings of the distribution lists.
We have received some inquiries from students regarding the message, including concerns about data protection. There was no actual data breach. The student sent the email to several student group-specific distribution lists, which are restricted for use by staff only.
We recommend that all Diak students review the network usage rules. Every student at Diak agrees to these rules when activating their Diak user account. They can also be accessed later on Diak’s website: https://www.diak.fi/opiskelu/yleista-tietoa-opiskelusta/opiskelu-saannot/tietojarjestelmien-ja-tietoverkon-kayttosaannot/.
As a reminder, students are not allowed to use Diak’s official name or slogan as part of their own email signatures. Only staff members are authorized to use Diak’s official email signature in their communications.
If you have any questions, please contact Diak’s communications and marketing team at viestinta@diak.fi.
