Studying in Finland

Finland is internationally recognized for its high-quality education system, commitment to educational equity, and innovative, practice-oriented pedagogy.

At Diak, our degree programmes combine rigorous academic studies with human-centred competencies that remain essential in an increasingly technology-driven world. Depending on the programme, students complete between 40 and 90 ECTS credits of practical training integrated directly into their degree to ensure strong professional readiness.

Non-EU/EEA graduates are eligible to apply for a residence permit to search for work or start a business after graduation. This two year permit can be used within five years of completing your degree, offering flexibility as you plan your career.

Student housing foundations, such as HOAS in the capital region, offer affordable accommodation for students. Apartments are conveniently located with direct access to public transportation and campus facilities.

In Finland, higher education institutions do not manage housing directly; instead, student accommodation is arranged through dedicated housing organisations. Options typically include private studio apartments, shared apartments, and bigger apartments for families (three bedrooms), rather than traditional university dormitories. Notably, rent in many student housing apartments includes high-speed internet, electricity, and water, making option like a capital region studio for approximately €600 per month exceptionally cost-effective.

Higher education students in Finland, including those studying at Diak, receive government-subsidised meals on campus, keeping daily living costs more manageable. A standard student card also provides numerous discounts on public transport, services, cultural events, and leisure facilities everywhere in Finland. 

Degree students pay a mandatory annual healthcare fee (only EUR 70,70 per year) that grants access to the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS/YTHS). This covers primary healthcare, basic mental health services, and dental care throughout your studies.

Primary and lower secondary education (also known as comprehensive school or basic education) in Finland is publicly funded and free of charge, covering tuition, learning materials, daily warm meals, and health services. Over 95% of children attend public comprehensive schools, providing a reliable environment for families relocating to Finland.

A student residence permit in Finland allows international students to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic term. This offers an opportunity to earn income and gain local work experience while pursuing your degree.  

Please note, that if you are coming to Finland from another EU member country, you do not need a residence permit. Instead you must register your right of residence, but you are allowed to start working immediately after arriving in Finland.

Just remember that Finland has four distinct seasons, so dress accordingly!
