A safe learning and working environment at Diak

Diaconia University of Applied Sciences fosters the well-being and safety of its community. The aim is to provide a calm, safe and pleasant learning and working environment. Safety is promoted through education, communications and monitoring measures.

Diak has a set of plans and procedures in place for the management, monitoring and assessment of the safety of our environment and responding to any safety concerns.

Our guidelines and management systems are designed with due consideration of activities which take place outside of our institution, such as work placement periods in Finland and abroad.

Safer space at Diak

A safer space means a community, event or place in which everyone has the freedom to be themselves and feel safe and respected. The principles for a safer space are commonly established and accepted principles that aim to ensure a physical, psychological and social sense of safety for everyone. A safe space is not the same for everyone, so the principles for a safer space aim to take into account the needs of every individual.

We acknowledge and value the diversity of the community

Every individual has the right to define their own identity and value. We respect each other’s boundaries and bodily integrity.

We have zero tolerance for inappropriate treatment, discrimination and harassment targeting a person’s age, language, looks, religion, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, background, life situation, health and functional ability, gender or convictions, for example.

We are conscious of our biases and prejudices

We acknowledge that our established attitudes and ways of thinking could offend people. We learn from our mistakes and errors. We apologise. We do not act based on generalisations. We are interested in each other and ask rather than make presumptions.

We learn through open discussion and listening to each other

We create a safe environment through our actions. Our gestures and word choices are meaningful. We can discuss matters we disagree on. It is important to justify one’s attitude and listen to others’ opinions. We build a positive atmosphere by taking other people into account. We show gratitude, encourage other people and address in any issues we may encounter.

We intervene in inappropriate treatment and behaviour, discrimination and harassment

Every member of the community is obliged to intervene if they encounter inappropriate behaviour. In the event of an unsafe or unclear situation, we are willing to discuss the incident with the person concerned or another member of the community we find safe. Incidents can be reported through Diak’s whistleblowing system Falcony.
