Strengthening social entrepreneurship

In an increasingly unequal world, new approaches to problem‑solving are needed. Social enterprises renew and complement society’s service structures. Instead of seeking to maximise profit, they aim to achieve the greatest possible social impact. Through sustainable business practices, social enterprises create positive outcomes for people, the environment and society. They provide services and develop new innovations in collaboration with, for example, municipalities and cities. Most Finnish social enterprises operate within the social and health care sector.

The primary purpose of social enterprises is a social mission, and the majority of their profits are used to advance this mission. In their governance, social enterprises typically emphasise participation and democratic principles.

International research and development

International research and development in social entrepreneurship can foster innovation, generate social good and strengthen sustainable development worldwide. Social enterprises can offer new solutions to pressing challenges such as inequality, poverty and environmental problems.

They can also engage in international cooperation with other enterprises, higher education institutions, organisations and public authorities to pursue shared social goals, such as breaking cycles of inequality. This may include joint projects, knowledge exchange, research, training and the comparison of best practices.

International research and development in social entrepreneurship is essential because it can support innovation, strengthen social wellbeing and contribute to global sustainability. Social enterprises can provide new responses to complex issues including inequality, poverty and environmental degradation.
