• nursing process of a surgical patient (pre-, intra- and postoperative care)
• care pathway of a surgical patient (elective and emergency patients)
• the most common surgically treated diseases and evidence-based nursing
• principles of trauma patient nursing
• fractures, wound care and stemming the flow of blood in an emergency
• applying systematic approaches and indicators (ISBAR, cABCDE, NEWS, CGS, TRIAGE, VAS) to the assessment and reporting of a patient’s condition
• identification and prevention of post-operative complications
• surgical patient interventions, including acute pain management, surgical wound care, mobilisation, parenteral fluid and nutrition therapy and pharmacotherapy and blood transfusions
• basics of anaesthesiology, the most common types of anaesthesia and anaesthesia medications
• multiprofessional collaboration
• patient guidance, continuity of care, care pathway
Learning outcomes
Students
• know the main surgical diseases and the most common surgical procedures
• know the principles of the care process of surgical patients
• are able to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based holistic care of a surgical patient, taking into account patient safety
• understand the importance of multiprofessional care at different stages of the care pathway of a surgical patient
• understand the use of health technology applications in the care of surgical patients
• understand the importance of patient guidance, the continuity of care and care pathway
Teaching methods
Evidence-based learning process. Lectures based on current research evidence on lectures and lecture recordings.
Achieving the aims requires participation in teaching and taking the exam.

The course is evaluated as numerically 1-5/failed
– Individual written exam K5-T1/fail
– Active participation in lectures and the course according to Diak's degree regulation §15

An individual written exam in the end of the course. Retake on general exam days.
