Photograph as a medium of humanity – Laura Malmivaara’s exhibition on display at Galleria Diak

Laura Malmivaara's Hope Despite Drought -photo exhibition is on display at Galleria Diak at Helsinki campus until the end of October.

Photographer, actor Laura Malmivaara is especially interested in portraiture as a photographer, because humanity is best conveyed through portraits.

– I’ve always been interested in portrait photography. I want people’s eyes to convey humane warmth and sensitivity. I hope these photographs convey that kind of intimacy as well.

Hope Despite Drought

Malmivaara visited Kishapu, Tanzania and got to know Felm’s development cooperation projects. She photographed girls and women whom she met in the villages.

Kishapu suffers from drought which is partly related to the unpredictable rains caused by climate change. Even though the droughts disrupt livelihoods, food production and access to water, the villagers are hopeful.

– I met many women who had concrete and good plans and ideas for the future about how to educate themselves and develop their villages. I was happy to see how active and hopeful the women were when it comes to their future.

Malmivaara’s photography exhibition is on display at Galleria Diak at Helsinki campus until the end of October 2020.
