-
Focus on Community Development Work
Bachelor
of Social Services
CHANGING SOCIETIES – CHANGING
COMMUNITIES This programme is taught in English and is open to
Finnish and international students. The curriculum focuses on the major
issues facing social work today. The growth of poverty and social
exclusion and the need to tackle discrimination and racism are key
challenges in the building of sustainable community. The course also deals
with changes in working life and social conditions produced by
globalization. The programme has a European and international perspective,
involving students from all world regions.
The programme has a
strong emphasis on community work and emancipatory social work methods.
The core skills taught will enable the student to carry out social
analysis and participatory research and to relate local conditions to the
changes in the wider economy and society. The aim is to enable graduates
to develop processes of intervention for change with persons, civil
society and organisations.
The learning starts with the student’s
own interests and perspectives. There is a strong emphasis on community
based learning (close to life and work). Critical reflection on values and
practice forms an important part of the course. The professionals produced
by this course should be a capable of working in a fast changing
environment and to work for change in disadvantaged urban and rural areas.
Learning
in English increases students’ ability to work in Finland on projects with
an international dimension or in multicultural areas. It prepares people
to work for a wide variety of employers in Finland or abroad.
The
course lasts for 3.5 years and leads to the Bachelor of Social Services
(210 ECTS credits).
